Time to turn an area of your home into an entertainment area? Tune up your house with a home theater by following these basic steps.

1. Determine where you would like your system set up: in a family room, an entire basement level or only one section, etc. Grab a pencil and some graph (or other) paper and get to work with a blueprint. Don’t leave this to “notions” or things get messed up – and quickly. Pencil in (a) your focal point – usually a television or other huge screen or home theater personal computer (HTPC) (b) seating (c) other main screens – projector and table / speakers and amps / computer / gaming consoles / DVD player, cable box and VCR (d) storage – shelves / remote and guide organizer (e) misc. – do leave some empty space. Cramped quarters are no fun!

2. Next, research your family needs. A home theater can incorporate: video game playing with any of the popular console systems like from Xbox, Nintendo or Playstation; it can feature a computer, DVD player and other recording and playing devices. Plus it can feature fancy audio equipment with multiple speakers. Add seating, lighting and screens into the mix. And plan ahead, too, looking to the future a little to prepare for the unexpected and for growth. For example, add extra outlets (for phone hook ups / computers / power supplies / cell phone, battery and other chargers, etc and leave extra space for the unexpected – extra shelves, equipment add-ons, storage for DVDs, CDs and remotes, etc. Grab your blueprint from above and pencil in your ideas.

3. Then comes set up time! Begin with your focal point and consider that your projector can reach to adjust distance from the screen for maximum effect. Test equipment at this stage before adding everything else into the area to make sure you get the results you like. After visuals, add audio into the mix. Set up your surround sound amp with plenty of video and audio inputs for all your fun systems. Then add the speakers and test again.

4. Then arrange other items (if you have a media center computer, many of these may already be part of the system): VCR, DVD player, gaming console and other equipment.
Then round out everything with seating, lighting, shelves, storage organizers, etc.

Party time! Invite your family, friends and neighbors over to enjoy and celebration. Have fun!

Are you planning to invest in a home theatre? If so, you need to pay special attention to your speaker cables. A home theatre is known only for its outstanding sound effects. So you need to make sure that you choose the right kind of cables for it. Home theatre cables are different from the cables we use for the sound of other systems like a laptop or DVD player. The cables used for home theatres obviously need to be longer. So, one thing which you need to keep in mind is that the impedance has to be low. This ensures better clarity. The impedance of cables is between 2 to 16 ohms. Always try to choose something in the lower range. Also the use of silver or copper wires is necessary for material of the wire. The gauge should not be too thick.

These are the basic points which need to be kept in mind while choosing the wire for your home theatre. But since these speaker cables have to be installed in the walls or floors, in most cases, it is a good idea to take some technical advice. Also a professional should handle the wiring when it is being installed.

If you look at the aesthetic face of your room, it is important to hide your speaker cables well. Instead of making a mess of all the wires, read up on the internet or take some professional help in proper arrangement of the wires. This will not only make your room or area look cleaner, but it may also help protect you from having any accidents in that tangled mess. Also the life and durability of the cables increase.

A home theatre has many components. To identify the power cords, you can use a label machine. This will help you not only in quick identification but also you can keep your plugging area clutter free. Also sectional separation of speaker cables will help in avoiding unnecessary tangling up which are very hard to straighten out later. Also use good quality gauge to protect the inside delicate wires from tampering by weather, external factors like temperature and also rodents and pets. Camouflaging your cables with the surroundings is a good idea. Also you can ask your interior decorator, to find out a good place for the placement of the entire home theatre system so that not only the set is placed well but also the wires which come with it. All together keep these simple tips in mind when you install in a home theatre system and make sure that the cables you use for the speaker are the best in quality.

Make sure to decide if you want to buy individual components and integrate them yourself or you want to buy an integrated system. While an integrated system is easy to install and use, buying individual components gives you more choice. Really it is a matter of personal preference and your specific circumstances because there are pros and cons for both.

Most people would prefer a package deal. The advantages would be that all the components would be compatible with each other, and they system will be easy to install; even the companies may offer you installation free or for minimal charges. Besides as all the components are bought from the same source, and used according to the instructions of the manufacturer/dealer, guarantee will hold and after sales service can be and will be provided easily.

On the other hand buying individual components will give you a chance to “mix and match”, because certain companies make higher quality speakers, while others make better woofers. Also you can choose to buy cheaper components if you are able to find them.

The downside is that some of the components might not be compatible with others and installation may be difficult. Besides if a certain component is used with another component from a different brand then the after sales warranty might not hold. However if you are an electronics buff or know someone who is, then go ahead make your own mix and match.

When you are buying a speaker system or for that matter anything, do not get carried away by the sales pitch of the company. Try to find out whether the features they are advertising are actually going to turn out in the terms of better performance or not. Read the information carefully, ask for a demonstration, ask an expert and try to find out the actual users’ reviews on Internet.

Prices given on internet are usually less than those in an actual store. On the other hand when buying online you do not get a chance to see and test the product. What I would recommend is that you visit a store or more than one, check out the different systems, ask for a demo and make a careful note of brand, prices and the sound quality.

When you have made up your mind on what to buy, or have at least short listed the product, then go to the Internet. You can use comparison shopping websites like or Amazon.com or NexTag.com to check up on prices for the products you have short-listed. If you get a better price on the Internet including the shipping charges than the one offered in a store, go ahead and buy it online, just making sure that you do not miss on any of the benefits, which were offered to you in the store.

Every DJ, whether they be just starting out or already versed in the DJing world needs to have an excellent set of DJ speakers. If you are unsure what you need or even the kind of speakers that are out there, you are not alone. The different kinds and types of speakers can be confusing at first. So, make sure you know what is available, how much you can comfortably afford to spend and then you can decide on exactly what you need.

First off, you need to have a way to hear what you are playing. What you need are monitor speakers. Monitor speakers will allow you to hear what you are playing without the background noise of the party going on around you. These will let you know what the crowd is hearing. If it sounds go to you in your monitor speakers, then it likely sounds good to them as well. Some DJs use headphones for the same purpose during a gig.

The next thing you need to know about speakers are what not to get for DJing. 2-Way speakers are not very good as DJ speakers due to the amount of distortion they cause and the lack of mid range tones. As a professional DJ, people will expect your music system to sound good, not distorted, so don’t get these. PA, or Public Address, speakers are what schools use to broadcast information. Although some DJs do use these if the event may include someone making a speech, a DJ just starting out probably won’t need these either. Having these two types of speakers are not going to help you in your pursuit of becoming a terrific DJ.

What you will need for DJ speakers are either passive speakers, or active speakers. Both are available at many different price points and from multiple manufacturers. The choice is yours on this, although the decision to go with active or passive may also be affected by the other equipment you already own. Active speakers have power amplifiers built into them. Due to this they require extra electrical outlets. They are easy to connect and you won’t need anything extra to power them. The opposite of the active speakers are the passive speakers. A passive speaker will need an amplifier to get power. This is fine, but you will need to fiddle with the amps to get the best sound and extra cabling to connect everything together. One of either of these types of DJ speakers will be required by anyone that wants to get started in the DJ world. So, your basic requirements for DJ speakers are monitor speakers or headphones as well as a set of either active or passive speakers at a minimum to get started.

If you’ve purchased a flight simulator or fighter plane game, there are several things you can do to your desktop or laptop computer to make sure you have an optimal experience. In this article, I outline the top 5 tips to optimize your computer for the best flight gaming experience.

1. Make sure your PC Hardware is the Best Available

3D Plane Games have come a long way in the last 10 years. Today’s flight simulators and 3D fighter plane games require that you have a system with a powerful CPU and graphics card and abundant RAM and hard drive space. To get smooth frame rates, you’ll want to invest in a system that has at least a 2 GHZ, dual core CPU, 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB free hard drive space. I also recommend a video card with at least 64 MB of RAM, and Windows 7 is the operating system that supports the most popular titles of plane games and flight sims.

2. Map Common Flight Controls to the Keyboard

Many flight simulator games will come pre-configured with keyboard settings mapped to a range of functions on the plane, such as adjusting the ailerons and rudders, changing the throttle, controlling the lights and radio, and much more.

What’s important is that you have a configuration that is most comfortable for you. Also, if you are playing a more conventional fighter plane game that does not come with many controls mapped to the keyboard, it can still be useful to add shortcuts to things like firing missiles and dropping bombs. Take the 5 minutes to go into the settings for the game you are playing and configure these keyboard controls to be optimal to your hand position. For instance, I like to keep my left hand on the typing position (keys ASDF) and my right hand on the mouse, so I map a lot of controls in my games to keys on the keyboard within reach of ASDF.

3. Invest in Cockpit Accessories

To get the most realistic and enjoyable flying experience, consider investing in additional cockpit accessories, or hardware that you would find in an actual airplane cockpit. The most common accessory is a joystick (or flight controller), but these days it is also possible to purchase a rudder, a yoke, or an enhanced gaming seat. Take a look on Amazon.com to get an idea of the range of accessories available (many of which are for sale for less than $150 or even $100).

4. Invest in a Good Sound System

Many games support surround sound, so it is worth it to invest at the very least a 2.1 speaker setup, but more ideally a 5.1 setup. If you have roommates or thin walls between your house and your neighbors, I recommend purchasing a good set of over the head, ear-covering headphones. Noise cancellation is generally not needed, so save your money there. But, there is a big difference between the chip in-ear headphones that come with MP3 players and those from companies like Monster and Klipsch, especially when it comes to realistic reproduction of the lower frequencies.

By investing in a solid set of headphones or speakers, you’ll be able to get a realistic, immersive representation of what it’s like to be in the cockpit of a commercial or military aircraft. You can get either for less than $100.

5. Tweak Software

If you can’t afford new PC hardware, or if you still want to get better performance with high-end hardware, there are several things that you can do in order to get optimal frame rates, which translates into “smoother” graphics.

First, make sure extraneous background processes are stopped if at all possible. Take the minute before you launch your game to halt virus scans, defragmentation, and close your web browser and other applications.

Second, make sure that you have installed the latest drivers for your graphics card and that the latest graphics frameworks are installed (such as DirectX and OpenGL).

1. Determine use requirement: Before starting with the installation process, you should be clear of how you will going to use in-ceiling speakers. Like if you use the speakers in dinning room, it will be used as background music for the parties, so it is better to install in-ceiling speakers around the perimeter of your room.

2. Use measuring tape to make sure that speakers are situated evenly around the room. You can mark the location with a pencil.

3. Use stud finder before cutting away your ceiling, to make sure that you will not hit any obstruction

4. Center the cutting template (which you must have got with your speakers) at the location of each in-ceiling speaker and mark an outline with pencil. Drill a small hole in the center of that outline.

5. Take apart the coat hanger. Bend it at an angle of 90 degree about 6 inches from end. Insert its tip into the hole you made in d wall until you reach 90 degree bend and turn the wire around to check if the area within the outline contains any obstruction or not. In case of no obstruction found, remove the hanger and cut the outline with dry wall saw.

6. Prepare a plan to run the wires of your speaker

7. Use fish tape to pull wire from hole to your speaker to access hole where your receiver will be located.

8. Be extra careful while connecting the wires.

9. Finish installing process as recommended by the instruction which came with your in-ceiling speakers

Follow these simple steps to install your in-ceiling speakers without any problem.

In terms of achieving high quality sound, the speaker cables play an important role that a lot of people fail to realize. Knowing this, most people tend to not really know what to look for when buying an ideal speaker cable.

For you to be able to understand it better, consider these cables as the artery of your home theater system. This is similar to how the arteries would carry your blood throughout your body. The cables are also responsible for carrying the audio signals away from the amplifiers or the receiver and deliver these audio signals to the numerous speakers that you have placed around the room.

Because there are a lot of manufacturers for these cable wires, you may find it difficult to choose among these types of cables manufactured by various companies. Aside from the wide range of choices, the prices for these wires also vary. Which is the best deal? The cheaper one or the more expensive one?

Choosing the best wires for your speakers can be a daunting task not to mention that there are a lot of wrong information that have been spread around about these types of cables. When buying cables for your speaker, you should not just buy it because it is expensive. Rather, you should choose it because it is high quality.

Here are some of the tips about buying speaker cables.

Keep in mind that cable wires for speakers have resistance to some degree; however, you need to know that the thicker the cable wire, the lesser the resistance. Thus, you should choose cables that have a decent gauge. The thickness will depend on how long you intend the cable to be. When you look at them in the store or online the thicker cables are far more expensive. However, if you do not really need the thicker ones you can save some money by purchasing the thinner ones.

In addition to the thickness of the cable, some people would also find it rather confusing about choosing to have a connector at the end of the cable. With a connector in the end, it will be easier for you to connect and disconnect the cable. But when it comes to the sound quality, these connectors will not really matter. So if you are all about convenience then getting cables with connectors would be a good idea. Speaker cables can make or break your quality of sound. So choose wisely.

Let’s face it. If you love playing games such as Call of Duty:Black Ops, having a top gaming headset can really be a huge advantage over the standard TV speaker sound system! Not to mention ANY game is more fun with better sound, period. Too many gamers play in High-Def video, yet rely on the crummy free Xbox live headset and TV speakers. Crazy, huh? Whether killing terrorists or playing WOW, the Sennheiser PC 350 collapsible gaming headset is a unit nearly any gamer would love! Let’s look at some of the features of this headset:

Sound Quality – Great sound quality; providing rich, deep bass while maintaining crystal clear sound reproduction. Very little distortion even at very high volume levels. Excellent for pinpointing sound locations for things such as hearing the enemies planting claymores or reloading. Also great for listening to movies/streaming videos, music, or even Skype!

Comfort – Large, well cushioned ear cups which circumvent the entire ear and provide hours of comfortable, all-night gaming sessions! The ear cups are padded with a nice, sweat reducing cloth material instead of cheap foam. As with any gaming headset, they can get a little warm if you live somewhere hot.

Microphone Quality – Excellent sound reproduction AND noise reduction, with the mic arm made of a very heavy duty plastic which is very hard to break. Although most top gaming headsets have a flexible mic boom, the solid arm on the PC 350′s rarely seems to be an issue with gamers. This is another reason this headset is often used with great satisfaction by Skype customers!

Bass – Plenty of accurate Bass reproduction even at very loud levels; but if you do not have a decent sound card in your computer, the bass can come off as weak. I had no problem achieving plenty of bass, and the high and mid ranges were still crystal clear. Great for “feeling” the sound of heavy explosions!

Build/Material Quality – Besides the fact that these headphones are made of soft cloth cushions for the ear cups and high density plastic for the frame, they have the amazing convenience of being collapsible for easy storage or transportation! Very few top gaming headsets have this unique feature. And the noise cancellation is also fantastic, putting them on is like stepping into another world.

Price – The PC 350′s are dramatically cheaper than they were a year or so ago, like about 35% – 40% cheaper!

Con’s – In my opinion, the one most common complaint on the Sennheiser PC 350 collapsible gaming headset is that it does not run as well on the lower end sound cards without an amp or a usb adapter. Another downside is that gamers occasionally complain about the wheel for the inline volume control not functioning properly and affecting the volume levels functionality. Not very often, but there are a few complaints never the less.

Coming up with your own speaker box design is not easy. I’ll give you that. Most people don’t have the understanding of how the loud speaker works to begin a design in the first place. It has nothing to do with a persons level of intelligence. I think most people just don’t care or don’t think that it can be done easily.

To a certain extent this is true; speaker design is not easy. But it is not impossible for the average home theater guy/gal to do either; certainly not impossible.

The basic parts of any cone type speaker are the same, and there are not very many parts either. You have the box, the speaker drivers -or cones, some acoustic stuffing, internal cables, binding posts, paint or veneer, speaker crossover components, and maybe some cones to sit them on. That’s about it.

But the art is in how these items are put together, and how they are balanced that makes or breaks a design.

The Crossover:

Arguably the most difficult part of the speaker design is the crossover. Why? It handles the voltage that enters the speaker through the cable and it splits the signal so that the correct information only enters each individual speaker driver. If you send the wrong signal to a driver you can blow speaker drivers in a millisecond. And most high quality speaker drivers are not cheap.

But in the last few years some different types of crossover have begun to gain popularity. They are active and digital crossovers. Digital crossovers differ because they take a signal from your CD, PC, or DVD player and split the signal all while in the digital domain. The advantages of making the crossover in this way are too many to list here. I’ll devote another article to that later. But these digital filters make it possible for even a novice hobbyist to experiment with different slopes and speaker drivers.

The best part of this; is that this digital technology is already available and working now. These digital programs can be installed into a computer or HTPC and used in the home theater system.

And these filters make speaker box design a project that many more enthusiasts can take on with success. Time and phase coherence can also be achieved with digital delays from within the crossover software program. Driver correction and room correction are also functions easily achieved within some of these programs.

Keep in mind you will need a channel of amplification, pre-amplification, and an output channel from the sound-card for each driver used (using a digital or active crossover).

The Speaker Box:

The other elements of speaker design are important too. Drivers should be placed as near to one another as possible. (the mid-range and tweeters) Bass driver positioning is not quite as important as bass waves below 100Hz are mostly omnidirectional.

Cabinet quality is extremely important to the amount of energy the cabinet will release back into the room.

In a perfect situation the cabinet would be completely inert. Meaning; the speaker cabinet would not resonate or make any sympathetic vibration from the back-wave of the speaker cones. The only sound would be the energy from the speaker driver itself.

In the real world achieving this level of resistance to resonance is very difficult. The amount of materials and internal bracing would be considered extreme by most retail speaker builders. But this is the beauty of DIY speaker box design. You can make the cabinet as heavy and inert as your budget allows.

Final Point:

When you build your own speakers you will save a ton of money over retail high end speaker systems. It’s simple really, the amount of labor and markup involved in building speakers is extremely high. And when you do it yourself it’s extremely rewarding.

I wouldn’t have it any other way!
